Coffee Machine - Tackling Workplace Sexism with Theater
In an innovative departure from conventional seminars and training sessions on workplace sexism, the Equality and Diversity Commission, in collaboration with the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Science at the University of Geneva (UNIGE), hosted an extraordinary event that that dug into the nuances of sexist discrimination in academia. The "Coffee Machine" - A Theatre-Forum Performance by the Specta(c)tor group, took center stage, offering an interactive exploration of sexist discrimination in the research field.
Beyond Traditional Discussions
Held on February 6th, 2024, at the Physiscope within Science II, the event unfolded in an atmosphere dense with anticipation. The Specta(c)tor theatre forum, renowned for its dynamic engagement with social issues, has previously captivated audiences at significant venues, including the League of European Researchers' conference and a UNIGE Summer School in 2022, as well as CERN and the UNIGE Summer School on "Prejudice, Discrimination, and the Diversity Challenge" in 2023.
This performance was no exception, drawing in community members from across the Faculty of Science, keen to engage with the complex issue of sexism in an academic setting. Before the curtain rose, a welcome mixer set the stage for an afternoon of reflection, dialogue, and potential transformation.

The event, spearheaded by the new Dean's office in collaboration with the Faculty of Science’s Equality and Diversity Committee, was more than just a performance - it was a catalyst for introspection, communication, and inclusion. The Specta(c)tor team's approach, served not only to entertain but to educate and inspire.
This theater-forum represents just one of the steps UNIGE's Faculty of Science is taking to create a more inclusive and respectful academic environment. It highlights a commitment to not only recognizing but actively addressing the challenges of sexism and discrimination - a step towards a future where academic excellence includes being a space free from discrimination, where every voice is heard and valued.
