Comparative literature examines the role and function of literature in society and culture, focusing on literary theory, text analysis, movement analysis, and interactions between different languages and literatures (French, English, German, Spanish, Japanese, Russian, etc.). Marked by the refusal to define any borders beforehand, it implies a multidisciplinary approach. Comparatists are interested not only in the comparative study of different national literatures, but also in the relationship between literature and the various arts and media (cinema, painting, music, etc.), the question of translation, that of reception, or that of different theoretical discourses. The study of comparative literature presupposes knowledge or learning of at least one language other than French, whether modern or ancient, taught at the Faculty.
Master's studies offer the possibility of an internship and an introduction to literary translation.
1.5 years (3 semesters)
Except for disciplines involving modern languages (Spanish, Italian, English and German), where courses are offered in the relevant language.
