General history is organized around five fields of study. On the one hand, four periods: ancient history, medieval history, modern history and contemporary history. Secondly, the department is the only one in the French-speaking part of Switzerland to have a transperiodic Swiss history unit. Geographically, the focus is not only on Switzerland and Europe, but also on the Americas, Africa and Asia. Within the Department, historical events are often explained in a transnational context. The teaching focuses on a variety of approaches: gender history, environmental and social history, media and cultural history, humanitarian, conceptual and political history, as well as the history of inter- and supranational relations. An abundant and varied range of courses also enables students to work in close contact with teachers and receive personalized support. Master's programs allow for periodic and thematic specialization. A new module, "Public History, Media and Archives", is aimed at the multimedia transmission of history to a wide audience.
