Oxford Research Encyclopedia - Literature

Online encyclopedia published by OUP with introductory articles on authors or literary themes. Each entry contains a short bibliography (Further reading).

Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics (4th ed.)

Encyclopedia on the history, theory and practical study of poetry, specifically poetry in the English language. It does not contain entries on poets or specific works but aims to put them in context in entries on concepts, time periods, and literary movements.

Essential databases

Bibliographic databases

MLAIB is one of the two key bibliographies (with ABELL, see below) in English studies, from medieval times to the present, to find quality critical scholarship (citations from books, articles, dissertations) on literature, linguistics, literary theory and criticism, dramatic arts (film, radio, television, theater), and folklore. 

Like the MLAIB above, the Annual Bibliography of English Language and Literature (ABELL) is a key bibliography for English studies, with a similar coverage.

In addition to full-text journal articles, LION has a large selection of literary works (English-language poetry, theatre and prose) from the 8th century to the present.

Each entry (on authors, genres, or literary subjects) contains a short introductory article written by an expert, followed by a detailed bibliography. Three modules are of particular interest for English studies: American literature, British and Irish literature, and Medieval studies.

Led by a non-profit, research-driven collaboration between a network of researchers from Australian universities and the National Library of Australia, Austlit is an authoritative database about Australian literature and storytelling.  It contains biographical, bibliographic, critical, and production information about Australian writers and writing from the late 18th century to the present.  

A collection of bibliographic and full-text databases for medieval studies. It includes the International Medieval Bibliography (IMB), produced by the Institute for Medieval Studies at the University of Leeds. Please note that you must be a member of the UNIGE community with an ISIs account to access it. You first need to register with the BGE using this online form (which only needs to be completed once).

Contains Shakespeare-related scholarship and theatrical productions published or produced worldwide from 1960 to the present.

Literary texts archives

A collection of scholarly editions and studies of medieval texts published by Liverpool University Press.

Digital editions of works published in England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British North America between the end of the 15th century and early 18th century. Full-text search is available for most of the works, as well as citations and scans of each page. 

Eighteenth Century Collections Online (ECCO) completes EEBO (above) with works published in Great Britain in the 18th century. 

Annotated digital editions of literary texts published by OUP for researchers and students. Provides full-text access to the following modules: Renaissance drama, poetry and prose; Shakespeare; Early 17th century drama, poetry and prose; Restoration drama, poetry and prose.

Large collection of free ebooks. Most are copyright free, while others are not but can be used for non-commercial purposes. Full-text search is available.

Suggested reading
