Ceremony in Honor of the 2024 Graduates

On Thursday, November 16, 2024, the Faculty of Science at the University of Geneva celebrated the graduation of 719 students in a grand ceremony held at the Théâtre du Léman. In the presence of the Dean, Professor Costanza Bonadonna, and State Councillor Madame Anne Hiltpold, this event marked a pivotal milestone in the academic and personal journeys of the graduates.

Both solemn and festive, the ceremony brought together an enthusiastic audience comprising graduates, their families and friends, as well as members of the academic community and Faculty partners. On this occasion, Vice-Rector Professor Juliane Schröter delivered a speech emphasizing the value of the diplomas and the challenges awaiting the graduates during this transitional period marked by both opportunities and uncertainties.

Throughout the evening, the graduates, representing eight scientific disciplines, were celebrated. In her address, the Dean praised their determination in overcoming academic and personal challenges, highlighting that each department forms a cornerstone of the Faculty's intellectual diversity and richness. She also warmly thanked the families and loved ones of the graduates, emphasizing the importance of their support in achieving this collective success.

One of the highlights of this year was the presentation of the Teaching Awards, a true milestone. Initiated by the Association of Science Students (AESc), this award aims to recognize teaching excellence. Five professors were honored for their exceptional dedication to students. In his address, Mr. Axel Grand, President of the AESc, emphasized the critical importance of teaching—not only for instilling a passion for science but also for preparing graduates to face the challenges of tomorrow.

The speeches delivered by the guests offered inspiring perspectives to the graduates. In her address, Vice-Rector Professor Schröter encouraged graduates to reflect on the significance of their diplomas, highlighting the importance of the skills they have developed: technical, critical, and interpersonal.

For her part, the Dean reminded the audience of the Faculty's core values—responsibility, creativity, inclusivity, collaboration, and commitment. She urged the graduates to carry these principles throughout their journeys, whether in research, professional careers, or active contributions to society.

More than 1,300 people attended this graduation ceremony, a number reflecting the significance of the event for the university community. Graduates, families, friends, faculty members, staff of the Faculty, and several institutional partners came together in a warm and festive atmosphere to celebrate this pivotal milestone.

The evening concluded with a convivial reception, an opportunity to celebrate not only this cohort's entry into the academic or professional world but also the spirit of solidarity and pride that defines the Faculty of Science. This landmark moment honored a new generation of scientists, ready to tackle today's challenges and shape the future, supported by a community that believes in their potential.

As Dean Professor Bonadonna so eloquently said in her closing remarks: "You have climbed a mountain. You have pushed your limits. Today, you stand at the summit. And this is just the beginning."
