Call for Participation: Workshop on the Digital Preservation and Revitalisation of Endangered Scripts 23–24 October 2026 · Confucius Institute, University of Geneva
The Confucius Institute at the University of Geneva is pleased to announce the opening of participation for an international workshop dedicated to the preservation and revitalisation of endangered scripts and writing systems in the digital age. Co-organised by the University of Geneva and East China Normal University, together with an expert from Cambridge University.
Despite rapid advances in digital technologies, most tools remain focused on dominant languages, leaving minoritised, indigenous and endangered languages facing limited resources, digital disadvantage, and systemic marginalisation. Today, an estimated 85–90% of the world's distinctive writing systems are endangered. In China, minority scripts such as Naxi Dongba, Shuishu, Old Zhuang (Swandip), Poya Songbook, Lisu, and Yi remain vital cultural carriers but face increasing threats due to declining use and limited digital presence.
The workshop will bring together scholars and practitioners from China and Europe to share research, explore revitalisation strategies, and foster cross-regional and interdisciplinary collaboration.

日内瓦大学孔子学院诚挚宣布，现正式面向社会各界征集参与者，诚邀各方加入这场聚焦数字时代濒危文字与书写系统保护与振兴的国际研讨会。本次研讨会由日内瓦大学与华东师范大学联合主办，并邀请剑桥大学等专家共同参与。
数字技术的飞速发展并未惠及所有语言文字。当前，绝大多数数字工具仍以强势语言为主要服务对象，少数化、原住民及濒危语言所使用的文字系统长期面临资源匮乏、数字鸿沟与系统性边缘化的多重困境。据估计，全球约85%至90%的独特书写系统正处于濒危状态。在中国，纳西东巴文、水书、古壮字（方块壮字）、坡芽歌书、傈僳文、彝文等少数民族文字，既是各族文化的重要载体，也因使用人群减少、数字化程度不足而面临日益严峻的传承危机。
本次研讨会将汇聚来自中欧两地的学者与实践者，共同分享研究成果，探讨文字振兴策略，推动跨地区、跨学科的交流与合作。
