Blood Donation

Twice a year, doctors and nurses from the HUG Blood Transfusion Centre come directly to campus to make donating as easy as possible. Less than one hour, supervised by professionals.

You can donate blood year-round at the HUG Blood Transfusion Centre.

  • Be over 18 years old
  • Be in good health
  • Weigh more than 50 kg
  • Check that you have no contraindications here.
  • The evening before: avoid intense exercise and heavy meals
  • On the morning of your donation: have a good breakfast
  • Drink 1 litre of water before donating
  • Do not come on an empty stomach

The 5 steps of donation — less than one hour

  1. Medical questionnaire about your current state of health

  2. Confidential interview with a doctor or nurse to assess your eligibility

  3. Haemoglobin check (finger prick), blood pressure and pulse

  4. Blood draw — approximately 10 minutes for 450ml

  5. A light snack while you rest

Confidentiality

These steps are required by the Swiss Blood Transfusion Service to ensure the safety of both donors and recipients. All information provided is treated in strict confidence.
