pumpkin jack-o'-lantern
A jack- o'-lantern is a lantern carved from a pumpkin into the shape of frightening faces. In the US, carved pumpkins such as these are displayed during Halloween festivities (on 31 October, a few weeks before Thanksgiving, when the story is told).
Note that in this narrative scene, dishes from the list of the Thanksgiving menu reappear.
