Bakon Yeast

Emarel's husband Curtis Freshel took out a US patent on Bakon Yeast, a flavored yeast seasoning used to add a “meaty” flavor to plant-based foods, on 25 January 1938.

“In spring 2011, Ohly acquired Bakon Yeast Inc. Established in 1933, Bakon is well known for its yeast based savoury ingredients for the food industry and is best known for its naturally, Hickory-smoked Torula Yeast product range.”

Freshel's later US patent for the processing of smoked yeast is recorded in the Official Gazette of the United States Patent Office, 9 April 1951.
