Throughout the sketch, the adjectives assigned to Brother Lamb promote his characterization as serene, calm, tranquil, placid and evoke Bronson Alcott's involvement with the New-England Non-Resistance Society: in The Liberator Vol. XVI. No. li (18 December 1846): 120, Alcott is listed as attending the 1846 annual convention, proposing a number of measures to promote the cause of peace.
