Holmes, Oliver Wendell, Sr. (1809-1894)

BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Oliver_Wendell_Holmes_Sr_c1879.jpgOliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. was born on 29 August 1809 in Cambridge, Massachusetts and died on 7 October 1894 in Boston, Massachusetts. Trained as a physician, he was a Professor of Medicine first at Dartmouth and then at Harvard University. His literary work was highly popular in his day, and he is now known as a member of the Fireside poets, a group that included Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, William Cullen Bryant, John Greenleaf Whittier, and James Russell Lowell, with Ralph Waldo Emerson as a more marginal member.
