GENERAL INFORMATION

I study individual differences in people’s ability to perceive and use emotional information effectively, also known as “emotional competence” or “emotional intelligence”. Over the past years, I have developed several performance-based tests that measure different components of emotional competence, in particular emotion recognition ability.

Published tests include the following: GERT (Geneva Emotion Recognition Test; Schlegel, Grandjean, & Scherer, 2014); GEMOK (Geneva Emotion Knowledge Test; Schlegel & Scherer; 2018); GECo (Geneva Emotional Competence Test in the workplace; Schlegel & Mortillaro, 2019); WIPS (Workplace Interpersonal Perception Skill Test; Dael, Schlegel, Weaver, Ruben, & Schmid Mast, 2022).

My current research focuses on (1) the relation between emotion recognition ability and well-being, (2) the role of emotion recognition ability in social interactions (e.g., in conflict situations), (3) the measurement of personality and well-being through smartphone sensing, (4) smartphone and app usage as predictors of well-being, (5) the role of emotional intelligence in shaping the transition to parenthood, (6) the performance of Large Language Models in solving and generating emotional intelligence test items, and (7) procrastination styles and well-being.
