Geneva Summer School on Microplastics

The University of Geneva hosted the first Geneva Summer School on Microplastics : From Environmental Impact to Policy, Innovation, and Public Awareness from 16 to 20 June 2025, under the direction of Prof. Vera Slaveykova. Supported by SEED4EU+ Flagship 4: Environmental Transitions and the MIRACLE project, the school welcomed 40 participants from across the 4EU+ Alliance and beyond.

Through an immersive, multidisciplinary approach, participants engaged with leading experts from 4EU+ universities and Swiss leading institutions, Switzerland’s Federal Office of the Environment, UN Environment Programme, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and the World Economic Forum. Highlights included hands-on sampling of plastic debris along Lake Geneva waterfront, a World Café with stakeholders from industry, government, international organizations and NGOs, and the creation of 1-minute educational videos to raise public awareness. The innovative program exemplifies how universities can cultivate future environmental leaders equipped with the skills to address complex sustainability challenges.
