Would you like to host a student?

How does it work?

  • The host contacts the "1h par m²" team by phone or by filling out the registration form on the website.
  • A visit is made to the host's home to understand the host's wishes.
  • The "1h par m²" team provides the host with one to three student files. The host contacts the student and sets up an appointment at their home for a discussion. If the student still lives abroad, the discussion takes place on Zoom.
  • The host informs the branch of their impression and decision.
  • An accommodation agreement is sent out, summarizing the conditions of cohabitation with the host's wishes, the help requested, the amount of compensation for expenses, etc. An appointment is made with the host and the student to sign the agreement.

FAQ

I would like to host a student, but I have some questions

A room with a bed, a desk, and a place to store clothes; access to a bathroom and kitchen; space in the refrigerator and, if possible, a small space in a pantry.

The accommodation agreements provide for accommodation from September to June, for the duration of an academic year. However, it is possible to request accommodation for only one semester: some students come for an exchange semester.

Of course. The initial meeting with the “1h par m²” program team, which takes place at the host's home, allows them to set their rules and say what they will and will not accept.

From all over the world. From Italy or France, Madagascar, Colombia, Burkina Faso, or China.

No, the principle is that everyone eats or cooks independently. If desired, you can occasionally ask the student to eat and cook together.

There may be occasional tasks, such as washing windows, cleaning the refrigerator, taking out the recycling, or providing computer assistance. If the student enjoys cooking, you can ask them to prepare one meal per week. Perhaps you would like to improve your English or Italian through conversation. If you don't like going to the movies alone, why not ask to be accompanied? If you play Scrabble, don't be afraid to ask. The aim of the project is also to create contacts between generations.

Students who are offered a room in exchange for helping out cannot be absent during the entire period without classes from December to February. They can, of course, be absent for the end-of-year holidays and take a total of three weeks off from September to June. Beyond that, they must come to an agreement with their host, ask if it is possible, and work out with them how to “make up” for the time they have not helped out.

If desired, students can fill out a weekly tracking sheet provided by the program to keep track of what they have accomplished.

In addition to the hours of help, you receive 120 to 150 francs per month as compensation for expenses. The program promotes a barter of space for time, in a spirit of exchange and mutual aid between generations. If you need additional income, it is better to opt for renting, for example by placing an ad on the room rental website logements-enligne(at)unige.ch.

The student, of course. And this is not part of the help offered in exchange for the room. The student must clean their room, vacuum, change their sheets, and wash them.

The student must take out liability insurance covering damage to the host's property. When signing the accommodation agreement, he/she must indicate which insurance policy he/she has taken out. If the host breaks an item belonging to the student, the host will claim on his/her liability insurance.

The student is an adult. The host has no educational responsibility. If the student has an accident, the person indicated in the accommodation agreement must be notified.

If difficulties arise, you should quickly call the "1h par m²" team. A mediation meeting can be arranged. If the disagreement persists, it is possible to terminate the agreement by giving written notice at least two weeks before the end of a month.
