Student Information

The program's five expectations of students

  • Perform the tasks specified in the accommodation agreement
  • Pay the host the agreed compensation for expenses on the first day of each month
  • Take out civil liability, health, and accident insurance
  • Pay the University of Geneva a deposit of CHF 300, which will be returned at the end of the stay
  • Participate in workshops organized by the program to raise awareness about life with older people and communication/conflict management

How does it work?

Register

Registration is open from March 1 to May 31 for the fall semester (as of June 1, applicants will be placed on a waiting list) and from October 1 for the spring semester.

  • Send a message to 1hparm2(at)unige.ch stating your motivation for this type of accommodation.
  • Fill out the registration documents provided following your message.
  • Be available for an interview at the office (or via Zoom for students living abroad).

Being put in contact with one or more hosts

  • The process of connecting with a host can take a few weeks or months. It depends on how many hosts contact the program and what they're looking for. Sometimes it takes two or three attempts to find the right match.
  • The host and student set up a meeting, get together, and then give their answer.

Sign a housing agreement and move in

  • Once an agreement has been reached, the move-in date is set and an accommodation agreement summarizing the terms and conditions is signed in the presence of a member of the program team.
  • During the first few days after moving in, students complete the administrative formalities (insurance, deposit, registration with the Cantonal Population Office).
  • NB: Chance of finding a host: one in three or four. Each year, there are approximately 40 new students accommodated for every 100 to 150 registrations.

I want to live with a host and offer to help out, but I have some questions

From two weeks (very rare) to several months. Your profile and criteria must match those desired by a host. Many placements are made in June, then in August, as well as in December and January. The tasks are very varied: help with housework, shopping, looking after cats, tutoring a child, cooking a meal, IT support, etc. They depend on your host's needs and your suggestions. Personal care is not included.

They cover the electricity and heating costs incurred by your presence in the accommodation, as well as a contribution to Wi-Fi and radio and TV license fees. Each month, you pay a contribution of 120 to150 francs, depending on the square footage.

A host may ask you to help prepare a meal; this will be specified in the accommodation agreement.

Not necessarily. It will depend on your host. However, you will always have access to the kitchen and a bathroom.

It depends on your host and what they have specified in the agreement.
It also depends on your relationship with them. It is always advisable to discuss this beforehand before inviting someone.

You have signed a housing agreement for one academic year. Sometimes for one semester. However, you may be absent for up to three weeks between September and June. In the event of a special circumstance, the agreement may be suspended or terminated.

You can contact the "1h par m²" team. We will listen to you and help you find a solution. In the event of serious difficulties, the accommodation agreement may be terminated.
