Melis Karaca awarded the distinguished 2016 Gilles Mentha prize
This past Thursday, October 6th during the “Annual Clinical and Basic Sciences Research Day on Liver, Pancreas and Digestic Tract Diseases and Transplantation” Dr. Melis Karaca, Research and Teaching Fellow in the Maechler lab, was awarded the prestigious 2016 Gilles Mentha prize from the Geneva University Hospital (Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève) under the “Basic Sciences” category. This prize, awarded for the second time since its inception last year, recognizes young researchers for their excellence in multidisciplinary research combining clinical and basic sciences in the study of diseases of the liver, pancreas and digestive tract, in honor of the late Prof. Gilles Mentha, who was devoted to the study of these topics. Melis was recognized for her work entitled “Substrate-specific impairment of liver gluconeogenesis and altered feeding behaviour in liver glutamate dehydrogenase (GDH) knockout mice” which examines the role of liver GDH, a critical enzyme at the cross-roads of carbon-nitrogen metabolic pathways, on the maintenance of whole body energy homeostasis.
The conferral of Melis’ award was covered by various local media, including the Tribune the Genève, Le Matin, Yes FM, and Le Quotidien Jurassien.
