Kalyani did her integrated Bachelor of Science - Master of Science degree from the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal, India. She did her MS thesis under the supervision of Prof. Joyanta Choudhury in the field of organometallics and worked on the hydrogenation of CO2  to formate using cobalt- NHC based catalysts with a proton responsive ligand.
