Open Positions
The following positions are open within the Section of Earth and Environmental Sciences.
Institution: University of Geneva
Start date: September 2026
The Department of Earth Sciences and Environment at the University of Geneva is offering a funded PhD position within the Swiss National Science Foundation project “System-Informed Volcanic Risk Analysis: the case of the Southern Volcanic Zone of the Andes”. The research focuses on the socio-economic impacts of volcanic eruptions and the development of innovative, system-based risk assessment methodologies.
Application deadline: 28 February 2026
The Crustal Deformation and Fluid Flow group at the University of Geneva is opening a fully funded PhD position to work on the physics of geysers and hydrothermal systems, with a focus on seismic imaging and transient variations of the magmatic and hydrothermal system.
The position is part of the SNF-DFG funded SUBMERGE project on Strokkur geyser (Iceland), in collaboration with partners in Germany (Prof. Eva Eibl), Italy and Iceland.
Project Goals
- Image the hydraulic system feeding geysers using dense seismic nodal arrays.
- Apply seismic interferometry and ambient noise methods.
- Integrate geophysical imaging and process-based interpretation of fluid transfer.
Methods
- Deployment of dense seismic node networks and electromagnetic surveys.
- Advanced passive seismic analysis (interferometry, tomography, time-lapse imaging).
- Field campaigns in Iceland and other geothermal sites.
Candidate Profile
- MSc in Geophysics, Seismology, Physics, Earth Sciences, Computer Science or related field.
- Strong numerical orientation and solid Python coding skills.
- Interest in fieldwork in challenging environments.
- Fluency in English.
Selection period: April 2026
Application deadline: March 31st 2026
Start date: Around September 2026 (flexible)
