SUMMARY (Ridvan Askin, edited Deborah Madsen):
This is an undated booklet of recipes. In the short Preface Kellogg states that its purpose is “to furnish a series of recipes for the preparation of food of the highest standard of excellence as regards purity, simplicity, wholesomeness, and digestibility.” She also explicitly notes that “[a]ll animal products of every description are wholly excluded.” These recipes are for “those who desire to live close to the heart of nature, and whose ambition is to find the divine order of life and to continue in it” (n. pag.).
The booklet is divided into different sections devoted to Cereals (3-9), Breads (9-12), Leguminous Seeds (13-19), Nuts (19-25), and Articles Prepared with Fruits (25-32). Recipes include “Steamed Rice with Tomato,” “Cocoanut Corn Dressing,” “Nut Sticks,” “Corn Dodgers,” “Mashed Peas,” and “Fig Sandwiches.” Breads and doughs are always prepared with “graham flour” (9). Several recipes make use of products developed by the Kelloggs, such as granola and granose.
