Herald of Freedom

Herald of Freedom. Concord, NH: John R. French, 1835-1846.

On 24 January 1835, the first issue of The Abolitionist was published in Concord, New Hampshire and soon became the bi-weekly newspaper, the Herald of Freedom. Founded by free Black abolitionist Peter H. Clark, the newspaper was edited by Nathaniel Peabody Rogers from 1838 to 1845 and the influential Temperance and Abolitionist reformer Parker Pillsbury was editor 1845-1846. Henry David Thoreau's review of the newspaper first appeared in The Dial in April 1844.
