Production and Perception of Emotion

European Research Council (ERC) -- Advanced Grant to Prof. Klaus R. Scherer

ERC-2008-AdG Properemo 230331 – 2008-2015

The project pursues two major directions of emotion research: a) the elicitation and unfolding of emotion processes in the individual (production), and b) the perception and inference of such emotions by observers. Three major questions concerning production are addressed: 1) the appraisal process that determines the relevance of an event to one's well-being and one's potential to cope with the consequences, 2) the differential response patterning driven by the appraisal outcomes, 3) the mechanism underlying the mental representation of the continuous appraisal and response patterning process. Concerning perception, research focuses on how expressive cues are interpreted by observers and how this perception process is linked to the production mechanisms.

Expanded description

Representative publications

A central focus of research in the PROPEREMO research program has been the study of emotional Intelligence or competence with respect to both production (i.e., the appropriateness of emotional reactions) and perception (i.e., the ability to communicate and recognize emotions).
