Doctoral Assistant (PhD) position on an interdisciplinary project in deep machine-learning (ML)

The University of Geneva Computer Science and Particle Physics Departments invite applications for Doctoral Assistant (PhD) to work on an interdisciplinary project to develop cutting-edge deep machine-learning (ML) tools with focus on predictive, generative and anomaly detection models for High Energy Physics (HEP) and Computer Vision applications. The applicants will have the opportunity to work alongside a large international community as members of the ATLAS (CERN) collaboration, and bring the latest developments in ML to the collaboration. A successful candidate will work on a broad set of problems related to generative models such as FLOWS, noise diffusion, GANs and VAEs with a possibility to test these models in various applications including computer vision and image processing.

The students will work within an interdisciplinary working group led by internationally recognized experts in their field:

  • Francois Fleuret (Geneva, computer science) is an expert in deep learning techniques and simulation;
  • Slava Voloshynovskiy (Geneva, computer science) brings expertise in theoretically explainable ML;
  • Tobias Golling (Geneva, particle physics) has experience in designing and applying cutting-edge ML to LHC physics.

The successful PhD candidates have (or soon receive) the equivalent of a Master degree with a specialization in one or more of the areas of:

  • particle physics
  • computer/data science
  • computer vision/image processing

as well as outstanding grades.

The successful candidates will be co-supervised by Slava Voloshynovskiy and Tobias Golling and have the opportunity to be part of and shape this interdisciplinary project spanning all the way from the development of theoretical ML foundations to their practical applications and generalisation in real-world science questions in the above-mentioned domains. Doctoral candidates will normally complete their doctoral requirements within 4 years, however, extensions up to a 5th year are possible. The post includes teaching duties and supervision of undergraduate students, as well as opportunities for outreach work. Non-francophone candidates are encouraged to achieve proficiency in French during their first year of studies.
