Prof. Tobias Golling was awarded an SNSF Sinergia
Prof. Tobias Golling (Department of Nuclear and Corpuscular Physics) was awarded an SNSF Sinergia grant for the next 4 years together with Prof. François Fleuret (Department of Informatics, as of July 2020), Prof. Sviatoslav Voloshynovskiy (Department of Informatics), and Prof. André Csillaghy (Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz).
The over-arching goal of the project is to develop new large-scale machine-learning methods with better behavior when dealing with rare events, and provable guarantees to enhance performance of data-driven prediction and anomaly detection in the fields of High Energy Physics and solar astronomy.
This project will develop anomaly detection to aid in the ultimate task to search for physics Beyond the Standard Model using ATLAS data of the LHC. In addition the project aims at a unified approach to the inference problem and designing more efficient simulator surrogates, both of which crucial to approach the full exploitation of the LHC data.$
