L'Unité de psychologie sociale de la Faculté de Psychologie et des Sciences de l'Éducation de l'Université de Genève a été créée au début des années 70 par le professeur Willem Doise, au sein de laquelle il a développé, initialement, plusieurs lignes de recherche avec Gabriel Mugny, Anne-Nelly Perret-Clermont et Jean-Claude Deschamps. Cette unité a été animé pendant une long période par Willem Doise (décédé en janvier 2023) et par Gabriel Mugny (décédé en octobre 2021) autour de problématiques aussi variées que le développement social de l'intelligence, les relations entre groupes, les représentations sociales et les processus d'influence sociale. Son développement a amené à une reconnaissance internationale au point qu'on s'y réfère aujourd'hui comme à l'école genevoise de psychologie sociale.
