Caroline’s research investigates how ideology manifests formally in narrative on the basis of a transatlantic corpus of New Woman short fiction from the 1890s. Drawing on rhetorical and cognitive narratologies, she theorizes narrative ideology as a form of interpretive restriction shaping the predictive process underlying literary interpretation. This allows her to reconceptualize narrative ideology as a scalar phenomenon that can be approximated through the rhetorical analysis of the interpretive operations structuring the text. Her corpus comprises established New Woman writers such as Olive Schreiner, Sarah Grand, Charlotte Perkins Gilman, and Ella Hepworth Dixon, as well as authors less frequently read in relation to the movement, such as Mary Wilkins Freeman and Alice Dunbar-Nelson.

In parallel, Caroline teaches literary analysis and methodology in the context of two undergraduate seminars on English and American literature and coordinated the department’s Writing Lab from 2021 to 2024, which provides individual tutoring services to students about academic writing.

She is also active in a number of academic and non-academic associations pursuing, among other objectives, democratic participation and diversity in Swiss academia, vocational integration for at-risk youth, and the development of participative cultural projects in Geneva.
