Certificate of specialisation in linguistics - postgraduate program

Since 2007, the Department of Linguistics in Geneva offers a 1-year (30 ECTS credits) graduate program in Linguistics to students who hold an MA degree in Linguistics or an equivalent diploma. Courses are given in English and French.

The program has three main components:

  • Methods of analysis (6 credits)
We offer three accelerated introductory or "update” courses in the areas of specialization in the department, namely Syntax, Pragmatics and Experimental Linguistics. Students are required to take two out of three courses. These courses will be subject to an internal evaluation (for example in the form of an oral presentation or exercises to be submitted).
  • Specialization (12 credits)
2 seminars in one of the three fields (syntax, semantics/pragmatics, experimental linguistics). The seminars attended will each give rise to an evaluation (written work).
  • Research (12 credits)
Attendance and active participation in the departmental research seminars and the submission of a 25-page research paper (thesis). The thesis must be defended (similar to a Master's thesis).

Future applications: procedure for applicants depending on their status:

There are two scenarios:

Applicants from outside the Faculty of Humanities UNIGE must use the e-candidatures platform (non-Swiss qualifications, Swiss qualifications, re-enrolment, change of faculty, enrolment in a second faculty)

For applicants already enrolled at the Faculty of Humanities at UNIGE, applications are processed internally, without going through the platform. The internal process remains the simplest procedure: MA students in Linguistics submit their applications directly to the Linguistics Study Committee, specifically to the professor in charge of the programme, who decides whether or not to admit them. The academic advisor Olivier Frutiger then receives the application and takes the necessary steps to enrol the candidate directly.
