HUG climbs sharply in Newsweek's 2026 global rankings

The Geneva University Hospitals (HUG) have made significant progress in the 2026 international health rankings published by Newsweek. They have thus confirmed their rise to prominence, both in the rankings of specialized hospitals and in those of the most innovative institutions in the use of digital technologies.

Improved results in multiple specialties
In 2026, the HUG ranks among the world's best in seven specialties and improves its ranking in almost all of them, as assessed by the Best Specialized Hospitals 2026 rankings.

The most striking improvement is in oncology, with a spectacular jump of 40 places (175th), reflecting the dynamism and excellence of the teams involved in the fight against cancer.
Pulmonology (120th), obstetrics-gynecology (64th), and orthopedics (139th) also made significant gains, climbing 10 to 15 places.
Neurosurgery (107th) and cardiology (145th) also made significant progress.
Cardiac surgery (94th) remained virtually stable, with a drop of just one place.

Digital innovation rewarded
In the Best Smart Hospitals 2026 ranking, the HUG has made an impressive leap of 16 places globally to reach 68th position, reaffirming its position among the top three Swiss hospitals, alongside the Universitätsspital Zürich and the CHUV.

This performance confirms the HUG's role as a major player in medical and hospital innovation, placing clinical excellence and research at the service of patients. The Best Smart Hospitals ranking evaluates 350 hospitals in 28 countries for their pioneering work in implementing new medical technologies.

Ranking methodology

The Newsweek rankings are based on a multidimensional methodology that incorporates reputation, innovation, and patient experience:

Clinical reputation: a global survey of healthcare professionals assesses the reputation of hospitals based on peer recommendations and specialized expertise.
Technological maturity: the analysis focuses on the integration of cutting-edge technologies (augmented intelligence, telemedicine, robotics, etc.), a guarantee of medical innovation.
Quality and safety: international accreditations (such as that of the Joint Commission International obtained by the HUG in 2025) attest to the high standards of the institutions.
Patient experience: Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) measure the real impact of care through patient feedback on their health, quality of life, and satisfaction.
