Swiss research in the Mediterranean
Despite the landlocked character of Switzerland, Swiss scientists are quite active in ocean studies. The country is a full member of the Mediterranean Science Commission (CIESM), with headquarters in Monaco and presided by HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco. CIESM is supporting a network of several thousand marine researchers, applying the latest scientific tools to better understand, monitor and protect a fast-changing, highly impacted Mediterranean Sea. It runs expert workshops, collaborative programs and regular congresses, delivering authoritative, independent advice to national and international agencies. Prof. D. Ariztegui from the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Geneva, is the Swiss representative to the CIESM board and has recently participated in the annual meeting in Montecarlo.
