SUMMARY (Ridvan Askin, edited by Deborah Madsen):

This is the third in a series of letters to the editor of The Woman's Herald of Industry (Marietta Stow) on raw veganism. Rumford encourages Stow to continue her experiments with raw veganism, writing that “[i]t has not taken five years to take all the carnivorous element out of more than one of us.” Rumford reports on the establishment of the utopian community of “'Joyful,' as every one is expected to be who lives here.” He then corrects misleading information in an earlier letter concerning the correct quantity of food, giving details about his most recent breakfast and supper. He maintains that “it is an open question” whether salt “is not useful with natural food.” Later he returns to the question of salt: “After omitting the use of salt for over a year I am now trying the experiment of using a little in the grainia for the purpose of solving some important questions.” Rumford promises to share his results in the near future.
