Delphine Gardey wrote her first book on the history of clerks from a gender perspective (Gardey Delphine (2001). La dactylographe et l’expéditionnaire. Histoire des employés de bureau (1890-1930), Paris, Belin).
The book is one of the first historical study dedicated to the history of clerks and white collars in France. It examines the existence and limits of employees as social group from a gender perspective. The first part of the book proposes a general portray of employees : definitions, denominations, datas, jobs and places, social position ; growth, introduction of women in the office (private and admistrative positions), contribution to the definition and redefinition of social identity ; strikes, revendications, trade-unions and social movement from a gender perspective ; technological transformation of the office. The second part is a specific enquiry on male and female employees working during the inter-war-period in one of the famoust french car industry : Renault. It examines the growth of administrative tasks in a large scale company, the emergence of administrative specializations and organization of work, introduction of women, job and space segregations, and contributes to a broader investigation on white collar identity (in and outside the office). One of the aim of the book is to insist on the contribution of women to the administrative revolution both in public and private companies, to come back to their skills, the opportunities they had and the segregation they were confronted with.
During the years as researcher at the Centre de recherche en histoire des sciences et des techniques, she notably contributed to develop in France approaches dealing with gender and science studies or gender and technological studies. She did co edit two international books on these subjects with contributions or translations from Evelyn Fox Keller, Nelly Oudshoorn, Judy Wajcman and many others. The first one, ‘The invention of Nature’ : Gardey Delphine et Ilana Löwy (eds.) (2000), L’invention du naturel. Les sciences et la fabrication du féminin et du masculin, Paris, Editions des archives contemporaines) explores the way sex and gender are shaped by scientific knowledge. The aim of the book is to analyse discourses and practices on bodies and nature in natural and medical sciences and to come back to the use of gender differences in sociology or anthropology. The second book ‘The gendering of Things’ : Chabaud-Rychter Danielle et Gardey Delphine (eds.) (2002), L’engendrement des choses. Des hommes, des femmes et des techniques, Paris, Editions des archives contemporaines dedicated to “gender and technology” proposes in a long introductive chapter the way Social Studies of Knowledge or Actor Network Theory did (or did not) encounter gender issues. The book also presents new research material on gender and technology related to socialisation, education and work.
From 1998 she took actively part in a french (then) european resarch network on Gender and labor (Genre et marché du travail, MAGE groupe européen de recherche du CNRS) and to the journal Travail, Genre, Sociétés (http://www.tgs.cnrs.fr/) as member of the editorial board since its creation. She did edit and contribute to many issues and, for instance, was the editor of a special issue on Women pionneer in scientific and technical fields and co editor with Marlaine Cacaouault of a special issue on Gender, science, research who both dealt with international perspectives.
Part of her work during the last years was dedicated to feminist theory and historiographical reflexions on the body, gender, science and technology. After a stay as a research fellow at the Max Planck Institut für Wissenschaftgeschichte and the Zentrum für Frauen und Geschlechterforshung an der Technische Universität in Berlin as an Humboldt Fellow she did publish for Les Annales, and for collective books or special issues on these topics. A recent work is the co-edition (the first translation into french) of an anthology of Donna Haraway (Cyborg Manifesto, Situated Knowledge, Teddy Bear Patriarchy, Ecce Homo, Modest Witness, Race) Haraway Donna (2007) Manifeste cyborg et autres essais. Sciences, fictions, féminismes, anthologie établie par Laurence Allard, Delphine Gardey et Nathalie Magnan, Paris, Exils. In that vein, two articles did recently appear : an historical an political presentation of the Cyborg Manifesto to the french public : (2009) « Au cœur à corps avec le Manifeste Cyborg de Donna Haraway », Esprit ; an article on Bruno Latour’s sociology for a french feminist dictionnary on ‘male sociology’ (discussing notably Latour and Haraway’s theoritical and political proximities and differences) : (forthcoming 2010) in Questions de genre à la sociologie normâle , Dictionnaire de sociologie sous la direction de Danielle Chabaud-Rychter, Virginie Descoutures, Anne-Marie Devreux, Eleni Varikas, Paris, La Découverte.
Parallel to that work she published extensively on the history of administrative technology, technological tasks, tools, artefacts and knowledge in the office before the computer. The main part of her research work was a contribution to the social, technological and cultural history of information societies and economies in a comparative perspective.
Her book, Writing, Filing, Counting. How a paper revolution has transformed contemporary societies (1800-1940) (Gardey Delphine (2008), Ecrire, calculer, classer. Comment une révolution de papier a transformé les sociétés contemporaines (1800-1940), Paris, la Découverte, is a comprehensive study of the cognitive and material transformations that have been shaping Western societies and economies from the end of the 18th century through to the 1940’s.

She analyses the ways in which ordinary daily activities (such as taking note, writing, copying, filing, counting, bookeeping and finaly computing datas) and the values they carry change in relationship to the development of the commercial sphere and in the management of the state. The aim is to insist on cognitive tasks or invisible ways of doing that does usually not appear in 'classical' narrative on technologies and to pay tribute to these thin or specific knowledge. From a more macrosocial or economic perspective, the idea is to look at "little tools of knowledge" and the way they shaped both the definition and scale of government, state, and business.
She is currently working on the history of shorthand writing systems in Great-Britain and France since the 18th century and the place shorthand writing took in French Parliament as a democratic tool. Part of that historical and ethnographical investigation was published in Gardey Delphine (2005), « Turning Public Discourse into an Authentic Artefact : Shorthand Transcription in the French National Assembly », in Latour Bruno et Weibel Peter (eds.), Making Things Public, MIT Press, 2005, pp. 836-843.
She now intends to consider the world of politics through the objects, devices and material technologies that are necessary for it to exist.
