Research done in the ACE expedition presented at the national radio CQFD 07.02 & 31.01 (RTS) and television (news 04.02.17)

The teams of Profs. Ellwood (ANU), Jaccard (UniBern) and Hassler (UNIGE) have started the second leg of the ACE expedition.

"We left Hobart (Australia) on the 22th January at 11:45 pm and sailed in direction of Macquarie Island. However, a big storm caught us and was making its ways towards the Island as well, rendering any terrestrial work impossible.

We thus decided to move towards out next target- the Mertz Glacier. Since then we have been very busy sampling the continuous underway surface water supplied once or twice daily in addition of three stations where the water column down to 1000m depth was sampled. These stations were positioned to sample contrasting waters in the Sub-Antarctic zone as well as North and South of the Polar Front. We have been collecting sample for nutrients, biogenic silica and silicon isotopes, trace metals and their isotopes as well as isolating marine bacteria and sampling for virus metagenomics characterization."
