Agreements with Publishers

Researchers at the University of Geneva identified as first corresponding author by the publisher can benefit from advantageous conditions for publishing in Open Access with a certain number of publishers. Below, you will find the negotiated conditions for each of them and, where applicable, the procedures for benefiting from these conditions.

These agreements apply to article publication charges (APCs). Please consult the following document (in French only) for books.

Quota

The agreement covers an annual quota for all Swiss academic institutions:

  • 138 articles in 2023 [Yearly quota has been reached on October 17, 2023].
  • 180 articles in 2024 [Yearly quota has been reached on October 24, 2024].
  • 216 articles in 2025 [Yearly quota has been reached on November 5, 2025].
  • 235 articles in 2026

Once the quota is reached, a reduced APC of $3000 applies (see "partial coverage of publication costs" below).

All types of articles are covered except the following: additions, corrections or editorials.

Articles published in the framework of SNSF-funded projects are excluded from the agreement but are eligible for a reduced APC of $3,000 (see "partial coverage of publication costs" below).

Please also note that the ACS has annouced a fee of $2500 for making the accepted version of the manuscript available without embargo (e.g. if the Rights Retention Strategy is used).

Once identified, the author chooses the "Gold Open Access" option (decision of the rectorate), then selects, at the choosen license.

NB: Authors of eligible articles can retroactively opt for the Open Access option, in the same calendar year as the article publication.

Note

For publications that are not eligible under the scope of this agreement, the author can make his or her article Open Access by depositing the Accepted manuscript in the Archive ouverte UNIGE, without embargo for SSH journals, and with 6 months embargo for STM journals. The published PDF version can be shared after a 5-year embargo.

Then, he or she should select “Gold Open Access” and “Read & Publish fee waiver”.
