Interactive effects of copper oxide nanoparticles and light to green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Intensive research examines the environmental impact of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), however the influence of varying environmental factors on ENM toxicity is still overlooked. Our study demonstrates that the light intensity and spectral compositions affect significantly the interaction of the biocidal CuO-nanoparticles with green algae resulting in synergistic oxidative stress and cellular damage.  The study underlines the necessity to take into account the role of changing light conditions when evaluating the potential effects of ENMs in natural environment.
