Inaugural Lesson - Isabelle Charnavel

Isabelle CHARNAVEL (Linguistics Department)

Linguistic Perspectives  Monday, October 3, 6:15-7:15 p.m.,

room PHIL201

The ability to express one's point of view and adopt that of others is a central property of human cognition, which plays a key role in thinking and social interactions. It is therefore the subject of significant interdisciplinary research, among which linguistics holds a privileged place. Language indeed offers remarkably precise, rich and subtle means of expressing different kinds of viewpoints from different sources. This lesson will examine several perspective effects and the questions their properties raise about our ability to speak, illustrating contemporary research methods and goals in linguistics.
