Catia Alvarez is a biochemist, holding a degree from the University of Geneva. She completed her Master's in Biochemistry in 2018, with a focus on attachment receptors involved in the viral entry of Enterovirus 71 during an internship at the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine at the University. In 2020, she joined the group of Prof. Isabella Eckerle at the Department of Medicine at the University of Geneva. There, she studied the side effects of the rVSV-ZEBOV vaccine (Ebola virus vaccine) in collaboration with Prof. Claire-Anne Siegrist's team. Since 2022, she has been collaborating with Médecins Sans Frontières on the effectiveness of the recombinant hepatitis E vaccine HEV239 (Hecolin) during an hepatitis E outbreak in Bentiu, South Sudan.
