COURSE WEEK STRUCTURE 

Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is a critical goal for nations worldwide, aiming to ensure that all people have access to essential health services without suffering financial hardship. This five-day course explores the multifaceted aspects of UHC, emphasizing global health governance and the essential building blocks that contribute to the realization of this important goal. This intense course week is structured in two parts:

  1. Part 1, 15 to 17 April :  Global Health: intertwined governance, programs and financing
  2. Part 2, 18 and 19 April : Advancing Universal Health Coverage: important perspectives on access and essential health services

COURSE DESCRIPTION and SCHEDULE 

Part 1, 15 to 17 April :  Global Health: intertwined governance, programs and financing

This course will provide the participants with basic but contemporary knowledge and practices of the global health by primary global health organizations. The participants will acquire common understanding in the practices in the areas of global health programs, global health determinants, financing, governance and diplomacy the opportunities to discuss and interact with global experts in various areas from global health organizations.

Part 2, 18 and 19 April : Advancing Universal Health Coverage: important perspectives on access and essential health services

In the second part of the week, students will learn about a multi-partner platform called UHC2030 aimed at: “accelerating sustainable progress towards universal health coverage (UHC), focusing on building equitable and resilient health systems that leave no one behind and that provide the foundation to achieve health security”. Students will also have a session on the geographical aspects of UHC, particularly focusing on how people access healthcare and how to measure it. Additionally, there will be a session where Afghanistan will be used as an example to discuss how a basic set of essential health services is developed.

Moreover, students will engage in hands-on group work focused on a country or region of their choice. Each group will target a specific country or context to identify significant gaps in Universal Health Coverage (UHC), whether financial, equity, access, or quality-related. As part of this exercise, each group will gather pertinent documents and analyze the health system and health policies of their chosen context. At the end of the week, each group will present their findings on the identified UHC gap.

CREDITS AND FEES

2 ECTS (registration opened to graduates with a master's degree)

Lunches, coffe breaks and a social event are included in the fees 

  • CHF 700 for SSPH+ members, UNIGE or HES-SO members and partner institutions.
  • CHF 1400 for externals
