Denis Brunet
Background
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Applied Mathematics (1987) from the University of Geneva, Switzerland, and a Master’s degree in Computer Science (1988) from the University of Strasbourg, France. My early professional experience includes working on 2D electrophoresis gel image processing (1989) and agricultural robotics image processing (1991). I later focused on computer vision and artificial intelligence, exploring the theoretical aspects of geometrical and color features processing (1994).
In 1996, I developed two stimulation programs at the Functional Brain Mapping Laboratory (FBMLab) in Geneva, Switzerland—one for visual stimuli and another for auditory stimuli. In 1997, I initiated the development of the Cartool Software within the FBMLab, a project that remains actively maintained to this day.
Cartool features a comprehensive EEG processing pipeline, a robust microstate analysis pipeline, and a complete electrical source imaging (ESI) pipeline, along with tools for MRI processing. The software also offers highly interactive visualizations of EEG data, brain topographies, electrodes, ESI results, and MRIs, facilitating accurate and detailed scientific analysis.
Current project
The Cartool software transitioned to open source in 2024 and has been actively maintained and developed ever since. Planned future enhancements include completing the command-line interface, integrating independent component analysis (ICA) computation, improving EEG visualizations for specific clinical applications, refining ESI methods, and implementing numerous other advancements.
