A large number of calls for collaborative projects are currently open or will open soon within the EU Framework Programme for research and innovation “Horizon Europe”. They offer unique opportunities for European and global research collaborations in a wide range of scientific domains of societal, technological and economic relevance.
Swiss researchers can participate in all these calls, as a result of the third-country status of Switzerland in Horizon Europe. Swiss entities can lead work packages and key activities, but cannot coordinate projects.
Funding is being provided by the State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation (SERI).

SNFS Swiss Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023
|
|
The Swiss federal government has approved the financing of further transitional measures for 2023 calls for projects, including a repeat of the SNSF Swiss Postdoctoral Fellowships.
The SNSF will provide all the participation conditions by the call opening date on 1 September 2023 on its website. Call deadline is 1 December 2023.
|
|
|
COST Actions – European cooperation in Science & Technology (SNSF)
|
|
70 newly accepted COST Actions will kick off in autumn 2023, providing a networking opportunity for the scientific community (See full list).
Researchers with relevant expertise for one of these Actions can apply for admission to a Working Group. The application must be done directly through COST.
|
|
|
|
The General Assembly of the DARIAH ERIC voted unanimously to accept Switzerland’s application for full membership.
The Digital Research Infrastructure for the Arts and Humanities (DARIAH) provides a solid and sustainable framework to take part in European research and exchange and collaborate with European peers in dealing with the specific challenges of digital methods and Open Research Data in the Arts and Digital humanities fields. On behalf of the federal government, the SNSF is launching another call for SNSF Consolidator Grants in 2023 (“transitional measures”).
You are eligible for this call if you have a PhD awarded >7 and ≤12 years at the time of submission. Read more.

ERC Synergy Grants (Horizon Europe)
|
|
Call ERC-2024-SyG is now open. Submission deadline: 8 November 2023.
The ERC Synergy Grants have been developed in order to bring together complementary skills, knowledge and resources from 2-4 excellent researchers with the goal of jointly addressing frontier research problems from any field.
Researchers based in Switzerland are eligible to participate and be funded by the European Commission. However, only one Principal Investigator per project can be hosted or engaged by an institution outside of the EU Member States or Associated Countries. Read more.

Through co-funding of new or existing doctoral and postdoctoral programmes, the MSCA COFUND action promotes sustainable training and international, interdisciplinary and inter-sectoral mobility.

National Science Foundation (US) – Swiss National Science Foundation (CH) Lead Agency Opportunity
|
|
Expression of Interest deadline: 3 August 2023. Full proposal deadline: 2 October 2023.
The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on Research Cooperation.
Through a "Lead Agency Opportunity", NSF and SNSF will allow proposers from both countries to submit a collaborative proposal that will undergo a single review process at the Lead Agency. Read more.

Climate and Cultural Heritage Deadline for submission: 8 September 2023.
The Belmont Forum announced launch of a Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on the theme Climate and Cultural Heritage – Collaborative research to address urgent challenges. The Call aims to support transdisciplinary and convergent research approaches on cultural heritage and climate change. Read more.

Horizon Europe – Cluster 5 Climate change
|
|
International research initiative on climate change. Full application submission deadline: 12 September 2023.
The challenges created by climate change can only be adequately addressed through international cooperation. The SNSF is acting on this and joining a Canadian-led call. The call is aimed at funding transformative research that has the potential to deliver game-changing impacts to address at least two of the eight representative key risks identified in the Sixth Assessment Report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. COST does not fund research itself, but provides support for networking activities carried out within COST Actions.

European Commission funds research and innovation projects on crisis management, fight against crime and terrorism, external and border security, cybersecurity, privacy and trust through Horizon Europe. Read more.
«HORIZON-CL3-2023-INFRA-01-01 Facilitating strategic cooperation to ensure the provision of essential services» services is restricted to EU Member States, therefore entities from Switzerland are excluded.

Horizon Europe – Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA)

Doctoral Networks (previously “Innovative Training Networks”). Submission deadline: 28 November 2023.
Doctoral networks implemented by universities, research institutions and businesses, with the aim of training a new generation of researchers.

Staff Exchanges. Submission deadline: 28 February 2024.
The aim is to develop sustainable collaborative projects between different organisations from the academic and non-academic sectors (in particular SMEs), based in Europe and beyond.
Exchanged staff benefit from new knowledge, skills and career development perspectives, while participating organisations increase their research and innovation capacities.

National Research Programmes NRP (SNSF)
|
|
The next call for projects is scheduled for December 2023, in a two-stage selection procedure.
SNSF is commissioned to carry out 4 national research programs on themes such as:

Building culture (budget: 10.6 million Swiss francs); Biodiversity(15.5 million Swiss francs); Medicine and gender (11 million Swiss francs); Plant breeding (10 million Swiss francs).

Horizon Europe – Cluster 4 Industry
|
|
Submission deadline: 7 February 2024. The European Commission’s strategic objective for European industry is to transform it into a clean, climate-neutral, circular and competitive part of the economy. Research and innovation actions in this Cluster focus on the processing industry, the construction sector, manufacturing and materials.

Horizon Europe – Cluster 4 Digital
|
|
Submission deadlines: 7 February and 19 March 2024.
Progress in digital technologies shape all sectors of the economy and society.
Research and Innovation actions in this Cluster focus on strengthening the global competitiveness of the European digital sector while taking into account key environmental and societal challenges like sustainability or inclusiveness.
Possible for institutions in Switzerland to participate as “Associated Partner” with SERI funding, except for the Quantum Technologies part.

Horizon Europe – Cluster 4 Space
|
|
Submission deadline: 20 February 2024.
Maximising the benefits for society and the economy, fostering competitiveness and innovation, reinforcing Europe's autonomy in accessing and using space: all this comprises the European Commission's “Space Strategy for Europe”.
Opportunities in this Cluster range from Earth observation and navigation systems, to enabling technologies such as launchers, propulsion systems, electronics, and robotics.
Restrictions to the participation of Swiss entities may apply in some topics.
