Neurocritical Care
The Neurocritical Care Research Group, founded in 2025 by Professor Hervé Quintard, Head of the Adult Intensive Care Unit at the Geneva University Hospitals, is developing an ambitious scientific and educational program aimed at promoting postgraduate training and applied research in this field. Its work is organized around two complementary pillars: neuromonitoring and the study of cerebral metabolism.
In terms of monitoring, the team explores both invasive and non-invasive approaches in an integrated manner, using advanced techniques such as intracranial pressure measurement, brain tissue oxygen pressure monitoring, cerebral electrophysiology, and pupillometry. These tools help refine the understanding of patients’ neurological status and enable real-time adaptation of therapeutic strategies.
In parallel, the group has a strong interest in cerebral pathophysiology and metabolism, with a focus on the role of alternative energy substrates such as lactate and ketone bodies, which may serve as auxiliary fuels in situations of stress or brain injury. This cross-disciplinary approach, connecting advanced monitoring with metabolic exploration, opens new perspectives for better understanding the mechanisms of brain injury and identifying innovative therapeutic targets.
Finally, the group’s educational and collaborative activities ensure the training of a new generation of clinician-scientists while strengthening the international academic visibility of neurocritical care.
