Susanne Scherrer effectue ses études de médecine dentaire à l’UNIGE. Elle obtient un diplôme en 1984 et un doctorat en 1986. Avec le soutien d’une bourse pour jeune chercheuse du FNS, elle effectue de 1989 à 1991 un séjour de recherche à la University of Texas Health Science Center à San Antonio. De retour à Genève, elle poursuit sa carrière académique avec des travaux dans le domaine des prothèses fixes et biomatériaux tout en exerçant en parallèle en cabinet privé. Enseignante engagée et appréciée, elle développe ses recherches dans le domaine de la science des matériaux céramiques et de l’analyse des fractures céramiques grâce à la fractographie. Cette recherche pointue et pionnière en médecine dentaire lui vaut une reconnaissance d’experte de renommée internationale, ponctuée par l’attribution du Distinguished Scientist Award de l’International Association for Dental Research en 2014. Privat-docent de la Faculté de médecine de l’UNIGE en 2003, elle est nommée professeur associée en 2015, puis en février 2022, promue à la fonction de professeur ordinaire, responsable de l’Unité des biomatériaux, à la Clinique universitaire de médecine dentaire.
