Stéphanie Hugues studied in Nice, where she obtained a PhD in immunology in 2002. After a post-doctorate in Paris at the Institut Curie, she obtained a research post at INSERM in 2006. In 2007, she joined the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine, where she was appointed reasearch and teaching fellow. Awarded an SNSF fellowship in 2010, she was appointed assistant professor and developed an independent research laboratory. Her research projects focus on elucidating the cellular and molecular mechanisms modulating our immune system, which can lead to autoimmune disorders characterised by a breakdown in the body's tolerance of its own tissues, or conversely an altered response during the development of tumours. She is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Faculty of Medicine's Centre for Inflammation Research, which was set up in 2020.
Appointed associate professor in the Department of Pathology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine in 2016, she was promoted to full professor in April 2023. In July 2023, she became a delegate of the Dean's Office of the UNIGE Faculty of Medicine for faculty research platforms and premises, along with Professor Serge Nef. As of 1st April, 2024, she is Vice-Dean for Careers, Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and Platforms.
