The health and wellbeing consequences of restrictive European migration policies
On May 13th 2024, the Geneva Centre of Humanitarian Studies co-hosted a webinar with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) and the Lancet Migration European Regional Hub on the health and wellbeing consequences of restrictive European migration policies amidst the new EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and a recent MSF report.
Dr Chloe Marshall-Denton (Humanitarian Advisor at MSF) presented findings relating to health and wellbeing from the recent MSF report “Death, Despair and Destitution: The Human Costs of the EU’s Migration Policies“.
Expert panelists reflected on the findings and important implications and considerations moving forward in terms of research, policy, and practice.
The message was clear -the EU needs to adopt a fair approach to migration that respects the health and wellbeing of all. More research and advocacy is desperately needed to protect the health needs of all refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented migrants in Europe.
As Prof Blanchet also stated “The health system starts from a narrative change… not just the language but the vocabulary of health professionals. Dialogue, policies and implementation is key to us. We will continue to drive and encourage these incentives and are delighted to co-organize another event on May 28 at the Geneva Health Forum”
