Juliette Françoise

Juliette Françoise is completing a joint Ph.D. at the University of Geneva and the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne under the co-supervision of Pilar Nogues-Marco and Anne Conchon. She is also a teaching assistant at the University of Geneva.

She is interested in the monetary history of the early modern French empire, with a particular focus on the French presence in Asia. Her thesis examines the nature and the effects of liquidity provision by the French State to finance trade and war overseas and administrate and rule the settlements it conquered or acquired in Asia. Her research aims at explaining some key monetary features of overseas settlements, notably money pluralism and colonial hyperinflation. It also tries to redefine the working of the early modern French Empire through the lens of money.

She held a Master’s degree in early modern Economic History from the University Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and a MSc in Economics with reference to the Asia Pacific Region from the School of Oriental and African Studies of the University of London.
