Research projects
Research Projects
In the Master in Chemistry curriculum, the program requires :
- A practical training in research of 2 months (16 ECTS) OR two practical trainings in research of 1 month each (2 x 8 ECTS)
- A master thesis of 9 months (60 ECTS)
The practical training(s) must be done prior to your master thesis.
Research projects (practical training in research and master thesis) must have an academic value and fundamental research content.
The Master Practical Training in Research
The MSc practical training in research is a rather short project in a research laboratory. This is the occasion of a first contact with research and its environment. You will typically conduct a short project part of a bigger one which already going on in the laboratory.
At the end of your practical training in research, you are expected to submit a report to your supervisor within the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry. Your grade will be based on the report.
The Master thesis
The Master thesis is the final requirement to obtain your Master degree. It must be carried out after the acquisition of the 16 ECTS of your practical training(s) in research. The Master thesis is your first opportunity to start your own research. During 9 months, you will develop state-of-the-art chemistry within a research laboratory, learn to lead your project, plan your experiments, and report them to your supervisor.
Types of research projects
Depending on where the research projects (practical training in research and master thesis) are done, the inscription procedure differs. There is 4 types:
- Intra-muros master practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done within a research laboratory of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry.
- Extra-muros UNIGE master practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done in a research laboratory of the University of Geneva but not part of the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Exemples: Faculty of medicine, CMU, Section of Biology, Section of Pharmacie.
- Extra-muros academic practical training/thesis
The practical training/thesis is done in a research laboratory of a university, outsite of the University of Geneva
Exemples: EPFL, EMPA, ETHZ, CNRS.
- Extra-muros industrial practical training/thesis
The extra-muros master practical training/thesis is done in a private company. Note that the project must have an academic value and lead to original research. Technician-level projects are not authorised.
Exemples: DSM-Firmenich, Roche, Epithelix.
