Eco-quartier La Jonction: addressing heat in public spaces and cooperatives models

Marlyne Sahakian & Julien Forbat

The Jonction eco-neighborhood was built between 2014 and 2022 on a 12,000 m2 plot of land located between Boulevard de Saint-Georges and Quai du Rhône in Geneva. The visit will be around a cooperative housing development that was completed in 2018 bythe CODHA association, including more than 100 apartments, ten community apartments, and approximately 1000 m2 of arcades – making this one of CODHA's biggest projects to date. Marlyne Sahakian and Julien Forbat, from the University of Geneva, will accompany you and introduce you to members of CODHA and the inhabitants' EcoJonx association, along with a representative from the urban planning and architect association Aidec. After visiting the building, we will introduce a "living lab" project (SWICE) on cooling outdoor spaces. As a co-creation effort, the living lab aims at implementing changes to spaces and practices so as to ensure thermal justice for all, where people can engage in activities that are important to them, while meeting human needs.

Quai Vernets & Praille Acacias Vernets (PAV): urban renewal and densification

Carole Lanoix, Blaise Dupuis & Dennis Rodgers

Located within the municipalities of Geneva, Carouge, and Lancy, the large-scale urban project Praille Acacias Vernets (PAV) is one of the most ambitious in Europe. At the heart of this historic industrial and artisanal zone, a vast area covering 230 hectares will be completely regenerated, aiming to create 12,400 homes and 6,200 jobs while achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. The tour will begin at the Pavillon SICLI, an iconic building listed in the cantonal inventory of historical monuments. The PAV model will be presented there, followed by a visit to the Pont-Rouge hub with its station, towers, shops, and offices. Nearby, a new residential area with a strong pedestrian focus will accommodate 1,800 inhabitants. The tour will then follow the course of the Drize, a river undergoing renaturation, and conclude near the Quai Vernets construction site, which will be the first "2000-Watt Site" certified neighborhood in Geneva. This dense complex, the only site to have undergone an investor competition in Geneva, will include 1,355 apartments on approximately 4.2 hectares, near the University and the popular Jonction district.
