The Institute of Citizenship Studies is happy to invite you to its first online “Authors meet critics” event. Jennifer Earl and Katrin Uba will provide insightful critiques to the book “Contention in Times of Crisis” recently published at Cambridge University Press. Hanspeter Kriesi and Jasmine Lorenzini (editors), as well as Argyrios Altiparmakis, Sophia Hunger, Swen Hutter, and Theresa Gessler (authors), will participate to this online discussion. The book analyzes protest events during the Great Recession featuring a unique dataset based on semi-automated coding of protest events retrieved from international news agencies. The authors study protest across 30 European countries over a period of sixteen years (2000-2015), they show that protest waves are rare, only southern European countries experienced protest waves during the Great Recession. Far from being a critical juncture, the Great Recession is mostly characterized by economic protest, action repertoires, and actors involved that remain, by large, the same during this period of increased attention to protest.
