Résumé
To support more productive collaborative learning, the Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning community has been investigating pedagogical scripts and tools that support scaffolding and execution of scripts for a number of years. Much of this research has focused on classroom-sized groups (20-30 students), and focuses on improving already existing processes. When tasked with supporting collaborative learning in larger contexts, such as a hundred-person university lecture, or a MOOC with thousands of students, we face new challenges, both in terms of the pedagogical design, and in the technology support.
In my PhD research, we scaled up a 25 person course for teacher candidates in inquiry and technology, first to 85 students on campus, and then to several thousand actual teachers in a professional development EdX MOOC. Apart from the scale, the MOOC environment presented several new challenges, such as very different levels of motivation, experience, the asynchronous environment, etc. This presentation will present our pedagogical design for the MOOC, which enabled students to participate at various levels of engagements, but also created positive inter-dependencies between the different tracks, and the technology that enabled us to integrate rich collaboration within an EdX MOOC. I will also discuss our current work at the CHILI lab at EPFL in developing Professor Dillenbourg’s conception of “Orchestration Graphs”, which aims to mainstream and formalise these kinds of approaches.
