Maddalena Zaglio-Borgeat est doctorante en histoire contemporaine à l'Université de Genève. Elle est titulaire d'un Bachelor en relations internationales, d'un Master en études moyen-orientales et d'un Certificat de spécialisation en humanités numériques de la même institution. Ses recherches, Lost at Home: The Italian Settler Community in Postcolonial Libya (1943–1969), explorent l'évolution du rôle des colons italiens en Libye après l'indépendance, en mettant l'accent sur les réseaux de pouvoir des élites. À l’intersection de l’histoire, de la sociologie et des humanités numériques, elle adopte une approche mixte combinant l'analyse des réseaux sociaux et l'analyse quantitative de texte avec une recherche qualitative.

Maddalena a été chercheuse invitée à l’Université de Yale (printemps 2025) et à l’Université Sapienza de Rome (printemps 2023) et a reçu plusieurs bourses et distinctions, dont le Princeton University Library Research Grant et le prix de la Société orientale allemande. Elle a été invitée à présenter ses travaux dans des institutions de renom, notamment l’École française de Rome et l’Institut de recherche sur le Maghreb contemporain à Tunis. Maddalena apprend également l’arabe standard moderne pour élargir son accès aux sources et à la littérature inédite.

En parallèle de ses recherches, Maddalena enseigne depuis cinq ans au Global Studies Institute de l’Université de Genève. Elle donne des cours de Master et a conçu son propre enseignement sur l’histoire libyenne moderne et contemporaine.

Maddalena Zaglio-Borgeat is a doctoral student in Contemporary History at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. She holds a B.A. in International Relations, an M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies and an Advanced Certificate in Digital Humanities from the same institution. Her research, Lost at Home: The Italian Settler Community in Postcolonial Libya (1943–1969), explores the evolving role of Italian settlers in Libya after independence, with a focus on elite power networks. Bridging history, sociology, and digital humanities, she employs a mixed-method approach that integrates social network analysis and quantitative text analysis with in-depth qualitative research.

Maddalena was a visiting researcher at Yale University (Spring 2025) and at Sapienza University of Rome (Spring 2023) and has received several fellowships and awards, including the Princeton University Library Research Grant and the German Oriental Society Prize. She has been invited to present her work at prestigious institutions, notably the French School of Rome and the Institute for Research on Contemporary Maghreb in Tunis. Maddalena is also learning Modern Standard Arabic to broaden her access to sources and unpublished literature.

In addition to her research, Maddalena has been teaching at the University of Geneva’s Global Studies Institute for five years. She lectures Master’s students and has designed her own course on modern and contemporary Libyan history.
