Silvia Naef est professeure ordinaire à l’Unité d’arabe de l’Université de Genève depuis 2006, où elle a obtenu son doctorat en 1993 avec une thèse sur l’art moderne dans le monde arabe (publiée en 1996). Elle a par la suite travaillé sur les chiites en Irak et au Liban et leur rapport aux idéologies de gauche, en Allemagne (Tübingen et Fribourg-en-Brisgau, 1993-1996) et à Bâle (1996-2000), grâce à des bourses et subsides du Fonds National Suisse de la Recherche Scientifique (FNS) et de la Fondation Janggen-Pöhn (St-Gall, Suisse). Elle a enseigné dans les universités de Tübingen (1995/96) et Bâle (1997-2000) ; en 2000, elle a été nommée professeure associée à l’Université de Genève.

Sa recherche porte actuellement sur l’art moderne, les représentations visuelles et l’image, ainsi qu'à la question du genre, dans les mondes arabe et musulman. Elle a été responsable d’un projet Sinergia de quatre ans (2013-2017), Other Modernities: Patrimony and Practices of Visual Expression Outside the West, financé par le FNS, en collaboration avec les professeures Irene Maffi (Université de Lausanne) et Wendy Shaw (Freie Universität Berlin) qui a donné lieu a une publication (2020). Elle travaille actuellement à un projet de recherche sur les dons faits par les pays de la région MENA aux organisations internationales présentes à Genève, soutenu par la Fondation BoninchiElle fait partie du groupe de recherche ARVIMM (Arts Visuels du Maghreb et du Moyen-Orient, 19e-21e siècle) et co-organise un séminaire sur cette thématique au sein de l'Institut d'études de l'Islam et des sociétés du monde musulman à l'École des hautes études en sciences sociales à Paris.

Elle a été professeure invitée dans les universités de Toronto (2007-2009) et de Sassari (Italie, 2012), à l’École Normale Supérieure à Paris (2016), et à l'Université Saint Joseph de Beyrouth (2017), et chercheure invitée à Göttingen (2013) et Princeton (2003).

Elle est l'un des membres fondateurs de Manazir, une plateforme Suisse consacré à l'étude des arts visuels, de l'architecture et du patrimoine de la région MENA ainsi que de Manazir Journal. Elle fait partie du Comité exécutif de la Société Suisse-Asie. Elle est la représentante nationale pour la Suisse pour l'Union Européenne des Arabisants et Islamisants (UEAI), après en avoir été la présidente, vice-présidente et secrétaire générale (2000-14).

Silvia Naef is a full professor at the Arabic Studies Section of the University of Geneva since 2006, where she obtained her Ph.D. in 1993 with a thesis on modern art in the Arab world (published in 1996). As a postdoctoral scholar, she worked on Shia in Iraq and Lebanon and their relation to left-wing ideologies, in Germany (Tübingen and Freiburg im Breisgau, 1993-1996) and Basel (Switzerland, 1996-2000), with grants from the Swiss National Science Foundation and the Janggen-Pöhn Foundation (St. Gallen, Switzerland). She has taught in Tübingen (1995/96) and Basel (1997-2000); in 2000, she became an associate professor at the University of Geneva.

At present, her research focusses on modern art, visual representations and images, as well as in gender issues in the Arab and Islamic world. She was the leading reasearcher of the four years Sinergia research project "Other Modernities: Patrimony and Practices of Visual Expression Outside the West", funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (2013-2017), codirected by Prof. Irene Maffi (University of Lausanne) and Prof. Wendy Shaw (Free University Berlin), which resulted in a publication in Artl@s Bulletin (2020). She presently works on a research project about donations by countries of the MENA region to international organizations in Geneva, funded by the Fondation Boninchi. She is part of the research group ARVIMM (Visual Arts in the Maghreb and the Middle East — 19th-21st century) and co-organizes a seminar on this topic at the Institute for Muslim Studies and Societies (IISMM) at the School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS) in Paris.

She has been a visiting professor at the University of Toronto (2007-2009), the University of Sassari (Italy, 2012), the École Normale Supérieure in Paris (2016), and at Saint Joseph University of Beirut (2017), and a research fellow in Göttingen (2013) and Princeton (2003).

She is one of the founding members of Manazir, the Swiss Platform for the Study of Visual Art, Architecture and Heritage in the MENA Region, as well as Manazir Journal. She is a board member of the Swiss Asia Society. She is the national representative for Switzerland for the Union Européenne des Arabisants et Islamisants (UEAI), after having been its president, vice-president and secretary general (2000-14).
