Biomechanics and Translational Research in Surgery (B-LAB)

Overview

Our research group is dedicated to optimizing the effectiveness and safety of surgical devices and techniques throughout their life cycle. We adopt an integrated translational research approach spanning the entire continuum from preclinical biomechanical studies to computational modeling and simulation, while also incorporating post-market surveillance. This approach aims to continuously validate, refine, and improve surgical devices and procedures. The development of innovations grounded in these research processes is one of our major priorities.

Objectives

At the core of this approach is our experimental platform, which leverages state-of-the-art technologies in motion capture, three-dimensional imaging, and robotics. Its primary mission is the development of advanced anatomical models of human joints, enabling the accurate reproduction of complex movements and the mechanical loads experienced by orthopaedic implants in vivo.

Group

The multidisciplinary team is led by the Division of Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma of the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG), in close collaboration with the Geneva School of Engineering, Architecture and Landscape (HES-SO HEPIA), as well as the Kinesiology Laboratory (K-LAB) and the Anatomy Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva.

Location

Our experimental platform is located within the Anatomy Teaching Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Geneva, at the University Medical Centre (CMU).
